Suggestions for Controlling Diaper Rash Problem in Babies

Everyone wants their babies to be happy and healthy; however, babies often feel discomfort due to “nappy rash”, a condition that results in reddening and sensitivity of the skin under the nappy. This discomfort makes not only the baby but the whole family sad and unhappy.

Tips you can follow to prevent and treat nappy rash at home:

  1. Change dirty diapers as soon as possible: This is the most important tip for treating and preventing diaper rash! All dirty diapers – even if they are only wet – should be changed as soon as possible because a wet diaper moistens the skin. This reduces the amount of moisture on the skin that can aggravate diaper rash.
  2. Be gentle when cleaning the diaper area: Use alcohol- and fragrance-free water and a soft cloth or cotton wipes. If the rash is severe, use a bottle of water to clean the area, as this is gentler on the skin. Then, allow the area to air dry. Let your child go diaper-free as much as possible to allow the skin to dry and heal.
  3. Apply zinc oxide diaper cream: This is especially important if the skin is red between diaper changes. If your baby has severe diaper rash, cover the skin with zinc oxide cream like icing a cake. There is no need to remove the cream with every diaper change. It can be removed completely by gently washing it off at the end of the day.
  4. Contact your doctor if your baby develops signs of a skin infection: Signs of a skin infection include fever, blisters, pus draining from the rash, and a rash that doesn’t go away or gets worse despite treatment. Another sign of a skin infection is that your baby is in pain or is difficult to soothe.

Babies have very sensitive skin and sometimes, despite a parent’s best efforts, diaper rash persists. If your baby’s diaper rash persists or you have questions or concerns about caring for your baby’s skin, consult your dermatologist.
