What is Eczema?

Eczema (dermatitis) is a group of skin conditions in which the skin appears inflamed, red, irritated and often itchy. There are many different types and causes of eczema.

What are the Types of Eczema?

Eczema is a skin disease characterized by itching, redness, dryness and inflammation of the skin. Eczema, which has more than one type, is divided into different classes according to its causes and symptoms. Here are the most common types of eczema:

1. Atopic Dermatitis

It is the most common type of eczema. It usually starts in childhood and can become chronic. Genetic predisposition, immune system sensitivity and environmental factors play a role in the development of the disease. Dryness, itching, redness and inflammation are the most prominent symptoms.

2. Contact Dermatitis

It is a form of eczema and is caused by contact with allergic or irritating substances. Substances such as soap, detergents, perfumes, chemicals or certain metals can cause a skin reaction. There are two subtypes: allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis.

3. Seborrheic Dermatitis

This type of eczema is characterized by oily and scaly rashes, especially on the scalp, face, ears and chest. It may be associated with fungal infections and immune system factors. The form seen in infants is called mansion.

4. Numular (Discoid) Eczema

It is characterized by coin-shaped round, crusted and inflamed lesions. It usually appears on the legs, arms and trunk. Dry skin, allergic reactions and stress can trigger this type of eczema.

5. Dyshidrotic Eczema (Pomfolix)

It manifests as small water-filled blisters on the hands and feet. Symptoms include severe itching, burning sensation and cracking of the skin. Stress, sweating and allergies are among the triggers of this type of eczema.

6. Stasis Dermatitis (Venous Eczema)

It is a type of eczema that develops due to circulatory problems in the legs. It is common in people with varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. Redness, swelling, itching and open sores can be seen on the skin.

Treatment methods may vary depending on the type of eczema. Moisturizing the skin, avoiding allergens, reducing contact with irritants and using medication under the control of a dermatologist when necessary are important in eczema management.
