How to Treat Ingrown Nail?

Before the ingrown nail treatment, the severity of the ingrown nail is determined.

For mildly severe ingrown toenails, it may be sufficient to physically lift the nail upwards and make it grow from above:

Removing the nail

The nail tip can be carefully lifted and cotton wool, dental floss or a splint placed underneath. This separates the nail from the overlying skin and helps the nail to grow above the skin edge. At home, you will need to remove the material by wetting your finger and change the material periodically.

In phases accompanied by redness, swelling, pain and inflammation, gently lifting the nail may not be enough. In such cases, some procedures can be performed under local anesthesia:

Partial removal of the nail and nail bed:

This is a comfortable procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia in a clinical setting. The ingrown nail part is removed and the ingrown side of the nail is cut by separating it from the nail bed until the very bottom of the nail, called the matrix. The nail bed and matrix are then chemically burned with sodium hydroxide or phenol solutions (chemical cauterization.) This procedure prevents the recurrence of ingrown nail by eliminating the structure that produces the ingrown part of your nail.

This treatment is called “lateral nail avulsion and chemical matricectomy”.

Is Ingrown Toenail Surgery Painful?

Ingrown toenail treatment is a treatment method applied under local anaesthesia. No pain is felt after anaesthesia. Since the removal of the nail embedded in the skin will also accelerate the treatment, the severe pain felt due to stinging quickly subsides within a few days.
