Are steroids harmful? Should they be used or avoided?

Steroids in cream form are the treatment we most often prescribe for children with atopic dermatitis, and their effectiveness is supported by strong evidence in treatment guidelines.

However, the fear of their use, also known as “steroid phobia”, is widespread in society.

Steroid creams are divided into classes according to their effectiveness and potential side effects.

Dermatologists select the most appropriate active ingredient from these classes according to the severity of the disease, the patient’s age and the area to be used, determine a period of use and follow our patient’s response to the treatment.

Unfortunately, not using steroid therapy when necessary causes the need for more aggressive treatment in the future.

If the severity of the disease increases or the disease persists for a long time, it causes the emergence of additional diseases such as infection, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, and negatively affects the quality of life and social life of the person.

On the other hand, uncontrolled use of drugs can cause thinning of the skin, increased hair growth, increased appearance of capillaries on the skin, even side effects such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis in prolonged use.

However, we do not see this situation in medicines used under physician control. This unfortunate situation happens due to use of drug without knowledge. Unfortunately, the experiences of people who have lived this due to the steroids also lead to steroid phobia in society.

Steroid medications are unique treatment tools when used under the supervision of your doctor, but if not used correctly, they can cause results that are very difficult to reverse.
