What are the Causes of Excessive Sweating (hyperhidrosis)?

Excessive sweating may be due to genetic factors. This type of excessive sweating has no underlying disease and is called primary type. Primary type excessive sweating is seen in approximately 5% of the population. Its severity increases even more in situations such as excitement and stress and negatively affects social life.

For example, a student with excessive sweating gets his/her exam papers wet or torn, a health personnel has difficulty wearing gloves, a business person avoids shaking hands or changes his/her clothing preferences, a person with excessive sweating in the armpit area may hesitate to wear solid colored clothes regardless of summer or winter. This type of excessive sweating usually disappears during sleep, and the severity of complaints decreases in calm situations without stress. Sometimes excessive sweating may be due to an underlying disease or certain habits.
