This process, which is described as “vagina whitening“, “genital bleaching“, “vulva whitening”, “intimate lightening”or “genital whitening” among the people, is the treatment and lightening of dark skin changes that can be seen in the vulva, groin and breech area. What are the Causes of Intimate Hyperpigmentation?

• Age: Along with natural aging processes, loss of elasticity, wrinkles and dark discoloration can be noticed on the skin of the genital area. 
• Hormonal changes: The increase in estrogen hormone may cause darkening of the genital area, especially during periods such as pregnancy. 
• Frequent shaving: Irritation of the skin during frequent shaving may cause post-healing color darkening called “post inflammatory hyperpigmentation” during healing.
• Inflammation of the hair follicles that develop after waxing: The hair follicle being plucked and remaining open facilitates the appearance of hair follicle inflammations called “folliculitis” in the genital area, which has a very rich bacterial flora. During the healing process of this inflammatory condition, “post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation” may develop, especially in darker-skinned people.
• • Friction: Intense sports, itching, preferring tight clothes such as tights, skinny jeans, and increased friction on the skin such as sexual intercourse can cause skin thickening and dark discoloration.
• Synthetic non-breathable underwear: Except for cotton underwear, the preferred synthetic underwear prepares a humid environment in the genital area. In a humid environment, the solubility of chemicals may increase, it may facilitate dermatitis, infections, especially fungal infections, and may disrupt the skin protective barrier. These conditions can cause dark discoloration. 
• Use of scented and irritating cosmetic products: It can cause eczema on the skin, which may cause “post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation” or dark discoloration due to itching – increased friction.
• Insulin resistance: People with diabetes or insulin resistance may develop a velvet-like thickening and dark discoloration on the skin surface in the genital area and other folds, called “Acanthosis Nigricans”. Especially in polycystic ovarian syndrome patients, the possibility of developing insulin resistance increases. For these reasons, necessary blood tests should be evaluated in cases with the appearance of acanthosis nigricans.
• Obesity: Obesity can cause dark discoloration in the genital area with the increase of friction as well as insulin resistance.
• Fungal and bacterial infections
• Some inflammatory skin diseases (lichen planus, fixed drug eruption), some benign skin lesions (vulvar melanosis, lentigo, nevus, seborrheic keratosis, angioma, angiokeratoma, etc.) and skin cancers (melanoma, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, pigmented basal cell carcinoma, etc.) may cause dark discoloration in the intimate area. 

What are Choices of Intimate Bleaching Treatments?

How is Intimate Skin Laser Bleaching Treatment Applied?

Before the treatment, topical anesthetic creams are applied to the area to be treated and kept waiting. Afterwards, the area to be treated is treated with laser. After the procedure, redness, burning sensation, thin crusting can be observed, sometimes blisters can be seen.

Laser genital bleaching treatment is not a painful procedure, usually only cream anesthesia or cold application is sufficient for pain control.

What Should Be Considered After Intimate Skin Laser Lightening?

• • After the application, your doctor will prescribe the drugs you will use during the recovery period.
• After about 2 weeks with the peeling effect of the laser application, the crusts and the dead tissues on the upper layer of the skin are removed, and the living tissue underneath is seen as a more pink and healthy skin. The results of the genital area darkness treatment applied with laser can continue to be visible for a long time. Some follow-up home treatments or intermittent maintenance laser treatments may need to be planned to maintain well-being. If the underlying condition causing the dark color changes is not treated or if the daily habits are not changed, the problem will be more likely to recur. 

Could Intimate Skin Laser Lightening Cause Infertility?

Fractional ablative laser beams applied to the skin cannot reach the subcutaneous tissues. It can neither cause any changes in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus, nor can change any blood hormone values, therefore, intimate skin laser lightening treatment does not have the risk of infertility. 

Could Intimate Skin Laser Lightening Cause Cancer?

Laser treatments applied to the skin with the aim of reducing the color darkness in the genital area do not cause skin cancer or a different type of cancer. 

Only a lesion with a dark discoloration should be distinguished from a possible skin cancer appearance. Most of the time, dermatological examination is sufficient for this distinction, but in some cases, histopathological examination, ie skin biopsy, may be required to clarify the diagnosis.
